Roger it seems to me our major need is a new understanding of ourselves and
our universe. I'm doing what I can by working on several projects the major
one being the writing a book for my atheistic Chinese friends. It will be
about the research being done that is adding to our understanding of
consciousness. It will be translated into Chinese and printed side by side
with the English. I'm hopeful this book can be published and read in China
as recently I have been made popular in China by newspaper reports and
receiving 3 trophies as a news maker. Did I write you about receiving these
trophies? I would like to share this with my SSE friends if it were proper
to do so.
We will replace war with peace! China is rapidly becoming a leader in the
world and her policies and actions are strongly pro-peace. They can if they
so choose use the ending ceremony of the 2008 Olympics to promote peace. I
wrote a letter to the Olympic Committee that was published yesterday in the
Olympian, a section of the Chinese Daily. I have not received any response
from the Olympic Committee itself so do not know if any of my suggestions
will be used.

Dear members of the committee planning the closing ceremony of the 2008
Olympics:
China invented fire crackers so everyone is expecting fire works. Why
not end the closing ceremony with something different -- something that has
never been tried before. Provide a powerful spiritual experience that will
motivate every one to build our ONE WORLD ONE DREAM. You can do it! Of
course you must use your own design and method but still I would like to
share with you my ideas. Music can be powerfully spiritual. Why not put on a
contest and get people of all ages involved in writing songs of One World
One Dream. Select the best one with a chorus everyone can join in singing.
In my mind's eye I see a great orchestra including 50 Tibetan monks with
their long trumpets and huge iron Chinese bells whose reverberations Chinese
musicians can blend harmoniously into the voices of four great choirs of
children and youth from different countries and races. Let the chorus that
everyone sings be action music like a march with cymbals nod drums. A
spiritual awakening is imperative to alter the selfish, greedy exploitation
of Earth that is destroying Earth's capacity to support human civilization.
China has become an economic world leader. Please make China the spiritual
leader to build the One World Dream we all hold in our hearts.
Although I am not a poet, the Olympic motto ONE WORLD ONE DREAM
motivated me to write a song. It can motivate thousands of others who are or
are not poets. With the spiritual message in that motto you can motivate the
whole world to action. It needs to be done. DO IT!!!
A friend honors and loves the Chinese people,
Eunice Brock
One World One Dream
Above the battle cries of war,
Above the hate of race and clan
We raise the banner of one world.
One World One Dream
Above the battle cries of war,
above the hate of race and clan
we raise the banner of one world .
We wake from lethargy each man
to use the power of his love
to make our dream come true-
to use his skills for all mankind
working to build the world anew.
Chorus
We have the will!
We have the power
To give our world dream birth!
Now is the time!
Now is the hour
To build a paradise on Earth!
In homes amid the city's slums
children weep their bitter tears,
migrants in loneliness despair,
thwarted women suppress their fears.
The angry hopeless turn to crime.
In taverns jobless curse their fate.
Man of compassion now arise!
Need despairing ones forever wait?
Repeat Chorus
Far and wide we'll spread our healing arts
to end all needless death and pain'
With healing hands and loving hearts
we'll reach forth again and again
to restore wellness, making whole
the sick of boy, mind and soul,
healing the lame to leap, the blind to see,
the deaf to hear sweet melody.
Repeat Chorus
Foundations for one world be build
with justice, peace and equity
of education, jobs and health.
Respecting Earth's capacity
renewable resources we'll
use with knowledge and with care,
removing poison and pollution
from our Earth's water, land and air.
Repeat Chorus
My dear Chinese friends;
Some of you may have seen on T.V. how I celebrated my 90th birthday.
You also may have learned that I was born and spent my childhood in China,
leaving for America at thirteen years of age and returning at the age of
eighty two. People ask, Why did you come back to China? My answer is, "I
saw so much human suffering due to poverty and war and felt so helpless as a
child to do anything about it I determined to come back as an adult and help
the Chinese." My love for the Chinese people and my determination to help
them remained steadfast in my heart all my life so when my beloved husband
died at the age of eighty one I returned to China the following year. I came
back to a very different China, one free of civil war and mass starvation.
There had been and continues to be an unprecedented rise I economic
development that has brought China into a leadership position among nations.
Chinese scientists are among the foremost in the world and helped with the
important human genome project, It amazes me how the population growth has
been brought under control. Peace is being promoted through the use of
dialogue and through economic cooperation and cultural exchanges. I think
Jiang Zimin deserves the Noble Peace Prize for leading his nation to make
the abolition of war one of his nations goals. China is also taking measures
to improve its ecology.
With China making such great progress in so many ways, I ask myself what can
I do to serve the Chinese people? How can I show my love? Since coming back
to China I have learned much about China's successes and needs What I see
now as China's great need is what the whole world needs and that is a
solution to the ecological crisis threatening the ability of Earth to
sustain its growing human population. Chinese are dealing with this crisis
as are informed and concerned persons world wide by working for renewable
resources, reducing pollution, conserving soil, forests and wild life and
controlling population growth. This is very important work but how effective
is it in dealing with the root cause of this crisis which is human behavior.
What is needed is a new understanding of ourselves and our universe that
will change our goals for wealth, power, fame and pleasure to the goal of
acquiring wisdom and love to improve the human condition both physically
and spiritually. The materialistic world view supports the present
destructive behavior by subordinating spiritual values to materialistic
values.
The materialistic world view became dominant in the last century and was
brought about by the tremendous achievements of science and technology.
Before that religion had a powerful hold upon all cultures. Although the
doctrines and belief systems of the religions varied widely they held in
common ideals of love and service and taught as evil behavior such as theft
and murder. Almost all religions taught that there was life after death and
that good and evil practiced in life would influence for good or ill the
life after death. Science and technology largely undermined the religious
world view not by disapproving of it but because it proved so practical. It
has provided us with the things we enjoy and has changed nearly every aspect
of the way we live. For many science has replaced religion as it has the
great power to make the unknown known reducing many mysteries to what are
called scientific facts. Many of the functions of the gods became obsolete.
For millennium rain making was a very important function of deities. Now in
the Western World seldom are services held in the Christian churches to
produce rain. Sickness was commonly thought to be a punishment for sin until
bacteria were discovered. The influence of religion has been greatly reduced
by the challenges of science. Religion has also lost influence because its
divisiveness is producing in some places violence and terrorism. In
contrast science is a unifying force. They have one paradigm and work
together on projects such as supercolliders. The love and service of those
practicing a religion has done little to unify the world in comparison to
the Information Age brought about by science and technology. For these and
other reasons many informed persons have discarded religion and have become
atheists. It seems to me this is like throwing out the baby with the dirty
bath water for religions give meaning to life and have values that should be
preserved. What is needed, as I see it, is a new unified religion that is in
harmony with science.
Science, too, is undergoing great changes for relativity and quantum physics
has undermined the Newtonian-Cartesian paradigm. Many scientists find it
hard to make this change for they have as dogmatic a faith in the Newtonian-
Cartesian paradigm as Christians have in the Bible. The greatest shortcoming
of science, as I see it, is that research has been concentrated almost
solely on the exploration of matter and the forces that act on matter. Until
recently scientists have largely ignored doing research on the most
important thing that exists and that is consciousness. I define
consciousness as that which perceives, knows, loves, remembers, desires,
hopes, feels, creates and dreams. Science is on the verge of exploring new
areas beside consciousness. The phenomena produced by particle physics
require other dimensions beside space and time for their explanations.
Scientists do not know how many dimensions there are. Perhaps the laws of
these other dimensions will supersede the laws we presently assume as valid.
Who can say what can or cannot happen or exist until we know all the laws of
all dimensions?
I have a deep interest in both science and religion. I am a member of 4
scientific organizations all of which have scientists exploring different
aspects of consciousness. I am also deeply involved in religion but of a
type that is in harmony with the most advanced science. Growing up among
devoutly Christian missionaries I also accepted the Christian faith but even
as a child I could not bring myself to believe that God would burn anyone
eternally in hell. Since I was taught that doubting the church doctrines was
a sin I was troubled by my doubts. The year of my fourteenth birthday my
parents were in America attending many religious services to raise money for
their missionary work in China. I was with them and heard many sermons
about the sins God would punish and many dramatic descriptions of the bliss
of heaven and even more dramatic descriptions of the fires and torments of
hell. As I didn't agree with these preachers about a number of things,
especially the doctrine of hell, my doubts became an unbearable weight on my
spirit. The church was in a wooded area with a stream flowing by. On my
fourteenth birthday I hiked along the stream until I came to a spot secluded
by trees and prayed to God. I expressed how burdened I was by doubt not
knowing what to believe or where to seek for satisfactory answers. The only
thing I could think to do was to seek for truth. I promised God that I
would seek for truth and would live by the truth I found. The distressing
burden of doubt vanished and I felt an exhilarating sense of freedom which I
continue to enjoy. The next very helpful experience came about from being on
the debating team in high school. We never knew when we went to a debating
contest which side of the subject debated we would support. It was
determined by a chance drawing. Learning to debate both sides of an issue
taught there were many perspectives to the issues of life that should be
explored before decisions were made. It took a number of decades to shed
enough dogmas top join the Unitarian Universalist (U.U.) church. You might
be interested in knowing something about this church for there isn't one of
this kind in China. Its members support seven beliefs which are:
1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person
2. Justice, equity and compassion in human relations
3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our
congregation
4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
5. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our
congregations and in society at large
6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all
7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a
part.
I would like to mention some of the activities of the church in which I have
membership so you can compare with what you learned about religion. Because
we have within the membership of the church Jews, Buddhists, Christians,
atheists and many who haven't decided what to believe, many programs and
events are planned to encourage us to learn about and appreciate each
other. The church provides not only programs to stimulate personal
spiritual growth but also programs to deal with social problems within the
community and world at large. Children and youth are active in church
programs. One that I consider very significant is conducted for ninth
graders. Several U.U. churches cooperate. Youth in the ninth grade who choose
to take part in the program are taught through fall and winter in church
school classes about the culture and religion of two very different native
American tribes, the Navaho and the Hopi. In the spring they go by bus with
their counselors to visit these tribes where they are welcomed and included
in the tribes ceremonies. The youth develop an inside-their-heart
understanding and appreciation of religions different from their own. The
tribes' leaders understand and value what the church is teaching its young
people.
I believe in God whom I call Cosmic Consciousness (C.C.). Lao Tzu expressed
some of my thoughts in the poem he wrote:
There was something yet complete,
That existed before heaven or earth:
Without sound, without substance,
Depending on nothing, unchanging,
All pervading, unfailing.
One can think of it as the mother of all things
Under heaven,
Its true name, we do not know;
"Way" is the by-name we give it.
My name for it is Cosmic Consciousness which created our universe with a
design and purpose. I call my book My Story about Cosmic Consciousness and
almost every chapter deals with some aspect of consciousness research. This
new knowledge will, I believe, not only close the gap between science and
religion but will also give us a new understanding of ourselves and our
universe that will promote the type of love and service needed to heal our
wounded and polluted Earth.
How does my belief in Cosmic Consciousness effect my attitude toward you, my
Chinese friends? In America if a child looks or acts like a parent we say,"
He is a chip off the old block". I believe every person to be a chip off
Cosmic Consciousness. Therefore I respect not only your worth and dignity
but also your divinity. Consciousness builds for every individual their own
body of knowledge. For this reason I regard each of you as potentially my
teacher. Mr. Yu my gardener teaches me about Chinese weeds so I can
differentiate them from new varieties of flower seeds that are sprouting.
I wish this could be a dialogue, that each of you one at a time could sit in
a comfortable chair across a coffee table from me. I would offer you cookies
and tea or fruit juice. There would also be a jar filled with sticks of
candied haws. If I talk too fast, which I often do, you could offer me a
haw. A sticky sweet haw between my teeth does the job. But a dialogue is
impossible so the best I can do is to give you my email address which is
eunicemoebrock@gmail.com You may share
your ideas, dreams, questions and comments. We do not need to be in
agreement about our beliefs or philosophy but in the spirit of true
friendship I hope we try to understand each other and work together on our
common goals. Mankind has moved through the stone ages through many ages
into the Information Age. I am an optimist and from my viewpoint there is
within the uterus of the Information Age a new age gestating for the sperm
of science has fertilized the egg of religion and from this union a
spiritual age will be born. But I don't know the time when all of us will
celebrate the occasion with a birthday party.
There are a few things I want to mention before you start to read. I use
words such as mind, soul and spirit interchangeably with consciousness. My
nick name for Cosmic Consciousness is C.C. C.C. is neither male or female so
I use the term She-He and Her-His which are not in the dictionary. I'm sure
you have the intelligence to discern what I write seriously from what I
write with imagination. Find a good light, a comfortable chair, sit down,
read and enjoy.
