A moderate-sized Solar Storm occurred on Oct 24 2003, and captured the
attention of the media. It was of the size to cause some trouble for
satellite communication and power grids. According to NOAA, "There
have been three major flares in the last 24 hours, which caused
considerable disruption of high frequency communication."
We don't expect an effect on the GCP EGG network, but as an empirical
question, we took advantage of this event to see whether any pattern of
deviation might be observed. As the figure shows, during the period
from shortly before the storm of solar particles and energy hit the
earth atmosphere, through the peak of activity, there is no clear trend
of departure from expectation. The data appear to proceed in their
accustomed random walk.
